Improvement

Author and writing teacher Julia Cameron on what it takes to improve:

"It is impossible to get better and look good at the same time.

Give yourself permission to be a beginner. By being willing to be a bad artist, you have a chance to be an artist, and perhaps, over time, a very good one."

I like this sentiment. We are all beginners. Humanity is still beginning. I hope to see our next big stride. We may be there sooner than ever. Big strides come from huge puddles to cross.

Yes, I like the idea about incremental improvement, which is what you are presenting. But I dislike the presumption that beginning works that look beautiful are impossible. Her conflation of “being bad” at first attempts with the ideal of “perfection practiced” reveals that she does not know that the greatest improvements are created right at the start of any project or inspiration! For the single act of conceiving the art_concept is the single moment of creativity that is then followed up with diligence and practice and education and of course even more creativity etc. Well that’s what I reckon any ways mate.
