“We cannot become what we want by remaining what we are.”
Change is the only constant in life. Change is about moving forward and avoiding stagnation. Whether we like it or not. It’s best to embrace change and maybe even seek it out. Hence why seeking discomfort plays such a huge role in my life.
Seeking discomfort also means seeking change. To seek a change in routine. It might be the best idea of your life…or the worst. Who knows? The whole point is to strive towards living a life more meaningful and purposeful.
Taste and try many different things and styles. Leave room for discovery. Discover what you like and dislike. This can assist in designing your own unique style. Don’t allow your creativity to be limited by who you were yesterday. Build on that experience. Keep moving forward. Do it for you. Don’t be afraid to be different. As artists, we strive to be unique, yet we still want to be called “normal” and not “weird”. The last thing we want to be called is normal, common, average or typical.
Don’t just be inspired, innovate.
The problem with getting comfortable with something, or finally getting into that groove and you’re feeling good about yourself and confident about the work you’re doing, that might be the best time to mix it up and change a thing or two.
Sometimes comfort can hold us back. You don’t want to become uninspired or stagnant. Keep changing and shifting your perspective. Keep it fresh. The comfort zone might be safe but it’s boring. So whenever you do feel bored in life, consider making a change. Change something small. Maybe you like it. Maybe you hate it.
Try seeking a little bit discomfort
When I’m out of my comfort zone it feels as if I’m constantly growing and gaining new experiences. Which in essence is exactly what it is. I’m doing something I haven’t done before because I was either too hesitant to do it or I haven’t thought of it. During that experience, I’m also inspired. Inspired to do and learn more, and the entire process just begins to snowball. Before you know it, you’re living a life so fast and so full, you don’t have time to process it.
Change or seeking discomfort can lead to opportunity because you’re regularly changing your perspective by seeking out different ways of thinking, doing or being. An opportunity for your next creative idea or maybe meeting someone and learning something new from them, or even collaborating with them.
You want as many creative tools to play with in your mind.
A subscriber mentioned that she doesn’t seek discomfort overtly, but embraces it completely when it comes. I find that to be a good and healthy mindset for change. If we embrace it and make it our own, it can make the process to move forward and grow a little bit easier.

●Hence why seeking discomfort plays such a huge role in my life.●
Amazing way to embrace change.
I’m such a decadent well, sometimes, i love falling into the arms of comfort
And yet there is the butterfly, crawled out of her cocoon on flew into the unknown
Or did it
Could be it came through a different womb compared to mine
One that knew where it would eventually fly to…
November 25, 2021 at 2:57 pm
Interesting thought. As humans. we’re rarely sure of where we should “fly” to. For me at least, I believe our purpose is to leave nature/ the environment in a better place than we found it and how we can better the lives of others.
I’d refer to the quote of Jay Shetty, “Your passion is for you. Your purpose is for others. Your passion makes you happy. But when you use your passion to make a difference in someone else’s life, that’s a purpose.”
November 25, 2021 at 4:22 pm
Yes, i definitely feel that nature is speaking to us in this way. So yes we need to make that change for the bettet and nature will respond. On our bad behaviour and attitudes towards her and our fellow beings she has responded in a myriad of ways and unfortunately many have suffered.
Thank you for your kind response.
I love the quote.

Wonderful message, especially as this year is coming to a close to think about new goals we would like to achieve in 2022 and how we can end 2021 strong too! Beautiful butterfly.

Great Message. Transformation awaits if you are experiencing feelings of discontent, disassociation, and disconnection. Discomfort is your cue: your voyage toward self-discovery is about to disembark. I am excited for you.

Such true words… I hate change but I know it’s the only way you can become a better person. 😊
November 25, 2021 at 3:50 pm
Without any idea we transform from young to old in age and this teaches us that change is the only constant thing.
November 25, 2021 at 4:35 pm
“Sometimes comfort can hold us back. You don’t want to become uninspired or stagnant.”
Discomfort creates fear in people. A lot of people are fearful of trying something new. Once their basic needs are met, it is very easy to coast along and forget to innovate and test themselves.
Thanks for this inspiring article!

Change can hurt. the loss of a loved one will change your life forever. How you handle that change is what counts. I am working on being the best I can be. I think they would be proud of me.
November 25, 2021 at 5:59 pm
I heartily agree! We need change a new way of being and we need to care about the world and how we live in it, and we need to care aboutone another! The hardest thing to over come is what hurts us, and to then treat life as if it is a new day to begin anew in. The hurt we feel is not without reason at all. And when people do what they have____it is very hard to ever get past deep hurt. How to find happiness then? After that’s the question,
November 25, 2021 at 7:30 pm
Of course we need change. Though discomfort can be a tall order for people who view comfort as a right and not a privilege. Unfortunately in our world discomfort for a lot of people happens when their favorite coffee is no longer available. Having seen a little war upfront I think looking death in the eye is about as uncomfortable as I want to get but I can say it helped me never to take anything for granted again. And change everything.

Deeply insightful. And i now dare draw comfort from a dear friend’s pithy remark 30 years ago (when i quit being a banker to start writing instead): “You seem to have a talent for throwing yourself repeatedly into the deepest part of the lake…that too when you can’t swim!”
I still can’t swim…but i love being in the water 🙂

What an incredible example of seeking discomfort! 😀 Thank you for sharing your story Mani 🙂
November 26, 2021 at 5:51 pm
Wow. Well said. I completely agree with your view. I am also trying to come out of my comfort zone. It might not be easy but try and try until you get success. This definitely is a wonderful motivational post.
November 27, 2021 at 2:11 pm
I’m glad you’re getting out of your comfort zone. It’s not always easy but well worth the risk 🙂
November 26, 2021 at 6:10 pm
This is one of your best! I think that “change”, is what this era we are living in and through is all about! It can be so subtle that knowing something has changed, escapes us or it can be so overt and volcanic that it rocks the foundation of our lives! We need to have these conversations because this is how we grow and evolve. Thanks you’ve done it again!
November 27, 2021 at 2:08 pm
Thank you! You’re absolutely right. Well said!
November 27, 2021 at 6:22 am
Lovely post. As someone once said, “Nothing exciting ever happens in a warm room and comfort.”
Seeking discomfort really does help broaden the borders of growth. It’s scary though, and I have to really push myself to do it every day. Anyway, thanks for this post!
November 27, 2021 at 2:04 pm
I’m glad you’re at least pushing yourself! 🙂
November 27, 2021 at 10:41 pm
Great post. Sometimes we do not see change because many are fearful of the unknown hence many remains in a desperate situation because it’s comfortable versus seeking out something that is unknown and you may not know what the outcome may bring.
December 20, 2021 at 11:00 am
That’s very true. Hence seeking discomfort can be a great philosophy to live by. When you get used to it, it gives you the courage to seek out change, and that, in turn, can fill your life with so much color.
November 28, 2021 at 8:40 am
“Keep moving forward. Do it for you. Don’t be afraid to be different.” This line caught my attention… I mean it’s so true that at times we think so much about “What will they think” that we forget about ourselves and get stuck in that moment. We all are a unique creation after all… So why not cherish ourselves the way we are and follow our passions, if not for others then at least ourselves. And even if it’s hard to move on we can always try can’t we? And I truly loved the content.
November 28, 2021 at 9:46 am
I’m so glad you resonated with the article. You’re absolutely right. It won’t always be easy to move on, but we can definitely try. Why waste time living someone else’s life, or living a life others think we should live? Do it for you. The right people will find you with time, and they will find you 🙂

I taught at the post graduate university level for nearly 40 years. There are two things I emphasized; think critically and prepare to adapt. I believe that you expressed this with remarkable simplicity. Thanks for expressing your insight.

what if the problem is — that we are who we are supposed to be all along? Radical Acceptance …. we weave all of these problems because we believe we are suppose to be different — (remember your inner child’s imagination — sense of wonder — sense of adventure — when you are a kid — there is rarely a comfort zone.)
December 16, 2021 at 8:31 pm
You’re absolutely right. Well said.
Self acceptance – That’s what everyone should strive for, and then evolve into the best human being they can be. 🙂

December 22, 2021 at 10:59 pm
Love this post! I recently did something that made me feel uncomfortable at first. I started a blog. It was quite a leap of faith to share my thoughts with the world, but I feel that even if others do not like what I write it would be enough if my posts encouraged others to think about certain topics. Embracing change is the only way to find out what we are capable of and to move forward. Thank you for stating this so beautifully!
December 23, 2021 at 8:47 am
That’s wonderful to hear! Don’t worry about negative feedback. I highly doubt you’ll receive much. I find the WordPress community to be incredibly encouraging and supportive. Only rely on positive feedback and constructive criticism. Give it enough time and your audience will eventually find you and appreciate what you have to say 🙂
December 23, 2021 at 10:09 am
I love it! I resonate with so much here; recently wrote about something similar on my blog. We can only grow when we step out, stop making excuses and venture into areas we initially never even considered. With the discomfort and possible disappointment also come endless opportunities waiting to be embraced. Thank you for sharing this.
December 23, 2021 at 12:24 pm
Well said Mary! That’s very true. There will always be some kind of balance. Disappointment, which we can learn from, and endless opportunities we can thrive from 🙂
January 23, 2022 at 11:46 pm
Omigosh! Yes~! This is so true, it’s something I’ve also been struggling with. Getting out of my comfort zone, especially when meeting new people.
January 23, 2022 at 11:53 pm
(I tend to be anti-social, it took me transferring to another college once to realize my own lack of agency. Go to school, come home, that was always my routine. It felt weird doing something else, it’s like the fact that I was an adult now still hadn’t hit me and I was still wondering if it was okay to do certain things. I wasn’t “sheltered” I was just the type of kid who was . . . comfortable. I think that’s why I came to realize how important it is for kids to go through a rebellious phase and carve their own path. I’ve gone through emo phases but I’ve never had an interest to rebell- well, I think being anti-social was just deeply ingrained in me. People in kindergarten thought I was mute because I never spoke, looking back in classes I barely speak at all. *sighs* Finding my own voice and independence… it’s something long overdue.
January 25, 2022 at 2:15 pm
Thanks for writing this article; it aroused ideas I hadn’t conjured up before—of deeper creative applications in my approach to sharing my outlook. As you so clearly highlighted, “Change” in essence is a constant or should be perceived as continuous because each day it occurs, even if we believe we have no part in it. It is a natural occurrence that begins with us being alive, and what creates significance in our lives is the approach and engagement to all that comprises our best life.
I enjoyed your article; please keep them coming.
January 26, 2022 at 2:26 pm

February 24, 2022 at 2:07 pm
I loved this post, I am late coming to it as I just opened up my blog again after about 7 years. In those years I changed my style of painting to abstract which was a discomfort at first because I didn’t understand abstract painting or particularly like it. Then I stepped out of my comfort zone and shared it on social media, that was such a scary experience.
This month I started to sell my art and this has opened up a new world of marketing which I have never entered before.
I am excited about new opportunities and I just turned 65 years old, not retired from the day job yet but looking forward to it. So I heartily agree with your words.
February 26, 2022 at 10:32 am
I like how you touch on the idea of seeking discomfort for personal growth. It reminds me of the concept of antifragility which is the ability of a system to thrive and become stronger after facing stressors. It is not the same as resilience, because resilience is simply the ability of a system to maintain its original form after facing stressors. Antifragility is unique in that the system gains from undergoing stress. Author Nassim Taleb wrote a book all about this concept. Interesting stuff. Never stop growing.
